Happy Halloween!

My niece Ykaie was not able to go trick or treating coz she has been hospitalized for 4 days and was just discharged yesterday. She has been diagnosed with bronchopneumonia and she'll be on a 2 week antibiotic therapy. We are hoping for her speedy recovery. She just gave away candies to her Mom's internet shop customers and to the kids who were passing by the shop tonight. She'll just save her pirate girl costume for Halloween 2011. Happy Halloween everyone!

Halloween party on a budget

I was at National bookstore buying a pack of photopaper when I spotted a set of halloween party hats, loot bags and blowers. This gave me the idea to throw a small halloween party for my 7 nieces since they haven't experienced attending a halloween party before. I scoured the internet for cheap, quick and easy to make halloween party foods. The kids were all wearing Ykaie's clothes except for my niece Shy ( biggest kid). They didn't use the party hats coz I bought them Halloween headbands. They all had a blast! Maybe next year we'll be able to have a halloween costume party.

Stick the wart on the witch's nose using brown playdough. The level of the photo was a bit high for Ykaie's height but she won the game.

Wrap the mummy, Pass the pumpkin and halloween bingo They loved halloween bingo. They played it again after the party. I got the printables here.

Frankenstein Sugar Cookie Pops

I received 4 sets of Wilton Halloween cookie cutters from my Aunt last year so I thought of making some halloween treats. I picked out the Frankenstein cookie cutter and made a batch of sugar cookie pops. I used Wilton Sugar Cookie recipe and was able to make 18 pieces. I decorated the cookies with royal icing. This recipe is great for a small batch of cookies but I'll lessen the amount of sugar next time I try baking again coz the royal icing made the cookies a bit sweet to my taste.


Sugar cookies ( Wilton recipe)

1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
1 3/4 cups flour
1 tbsp milk
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 375°F. Cream butter and sugar, add egg and mix. Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth. Refrigerate dough 2 hours. Roll out dough 1/8 in. thick on lightly floured surface, dip cutter into flour before each use. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Place on cooling rack for 5 minutes, remove from sheet and cool. Makes 18-24 cookies.


Royal icing:
4 cups powdered sugar
3 tbsp meringue powder
6 tbsp water
1/2- 1 tsp almond extract or vanilla extract
food coloring

Mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, almond extract and water for 5 minutes. Add water a little at a time until you get the consistency you want.
Tint icing with desired food coloring.

Halloween Costume

Halloween is coming up! Have you found a costume for your children yet? We're done halloween costume hunting! I bought Ykaie a pirate girl costume and it was on sale for Php225 ( $5.13) The costume is quite long for her so I had to cut a few inches off the bottom to perfectly fit her. I also made a personalized trick or treat bag to match her costume.
